Affordable jewellery in India usually means jewellery that lasts a few weeks. The gold wears off, the chain marks your neck, you stop wearing it. Most people have a drawer full of the evidence.
Wumika exists because that didn't have to be true. Here's what we do differently, and why it matters more than any design decision we make.
The problem is the metal underneath
Nearly all inexpensive jewellery is built on a brass or copper base with a thin gold layer over it. Brass is cheap and easy to work ā and it reacts with moisture, sweat and skin oils. As the plating thins, that reaction reaches the surface. Hence the dullness, the dark patches, and the green mark.
No amount of careful handling fixes a reactive base metal. It's a material problem, decided before the piece is ever designed.
We use stainless steel with a gold-plated finish. It costs more and is harder to work with. What you get for that:
- Anti-tarnish ā it holds colour instead of dulling
- Water-resistant ā hand washing, rain, sweat and everyday life are fine
- Hypoallergenic ā genuinely comfortable on sensitive skin and reactive ears
It's the difference between jewellery you replace each season and jewellery you keep.
Everything under one roof
Wumika was founded by Linda Johnson, out of a specific irritation with how women actually shop for accessories.
Want earrings, a bracelet to go with them, something for your hair and a lipstick that ties it together? That's four sellers, four standards of quality, four delivery charges and four waits. Nobody had put it in one place and taken responsibility for all of it.
That's the gap: one place for everything you put on, and trust all of it.
Where we actually are
We'd rather you heard this from us: Wumika is early.
We started with jewellery because it's where quality matters most and where the market disappoints people most reliably. Getting that right came first ā anti-tarnish, hypoallergenic, wearable, affordable.
From here we're filling in the rest, category by category. Hair accessories and jewellery boxes are recent additions. Beauty comes later. Each range goes live only when we're confident it meets the same standard, because one bad product would undo the reason for building this.
What we sell
Necklaces from fine everyday pendants to statement pieces. Earrings across studs, hoops and drops. Rings, mostly adjustable so sizing isn't a gamble. Bracelets and bangles. Anklets. Nose pins. Most of it under ā¹500.
We stock in small quantities and restock what people love, which is why some pieces sell out. Message us and we'll tell you honestly whether something's coming back.
How we handle things going wrong
If a piece arrives damaged, faulty or isn't what you ordered, send a photo within 7 days and we'll replace or refund in full ā usually without needing it back. Chasing the courier is our job.
Being straight about the rest: we can't take change-of-mind returns yet. Return pickups across India cost more than most of our pieces, and absorbing that would mean charging everyone more. That will change as we grow, and we'll say so when it does.
So message us before ordering if you're unsure about a size, a colour or how big something actually is. We'll send extra photos, measurements, or an honest opinion. We'd rather help you choose well than have you disappointed.
