Office jewellery has a narrower margin for error than almost any other category. Too much, and you're the person whose bangles announce themselves before you enter a room. Too little, and you look like you got dressed in the dark. Here's what actually sits in that middle ground.
The two practical rules nobody mentions
Most advice about work jewellery talks about "professional" and "understated" without explaining what that means day to day. In practice, it comes down to two things: does it make noise, and does it catch on anything.
Dangling earrings that swing against your neck all day, bangles that clink against a keyboard, chains that catch on a lanyard or a laptop bag ā these aren't wrong exactly, but they're distracting in a way that adds up across an eight-hour day. Studs and close-fitting hoops avoid the problem entirely, which is why they're the office default rather than a rule someone invented arbitrarily.
What actually works
Small to medium gold studs are the safest starting point ā something like these flower-shaped studs read as polished without saying anything loudly. If you prefer hoops, keep them small and close to the ear rather than large and swinging ā textured hoops in a medium size hit that balance well.
One earring style, worn consistently, does more for a "put together" look than switching pieces daily. It sounds counterintuitive, but jewellery you don't have to think about each morning genuinely looks more considered than jewellery chosen fresh every day.
The one-piece rule
If you're wearing statement earrings, skip the necklace. If you're wearing a necklace, keep the earrings minimal. Competing pieces read as trying too hard in a professional setting in a way they wouldn't at a party ā the same jewellery that looks fun on a Saturday can look slightly off on a Tuesday morning meeting.
Comfort matters more than people admit
You're wearing this for eight-plus hours, often through calls where your hand is near your ear, meetings where you're leaning on a desk, and a commute on either end. Heavy earrings that felt fine getting dressed will genuinely bother you by 3pm. Lightweight stainless steel construction is worth prioritising here specifically ā daily wear over long hours is where weight actually shows up as a problem.
Building an office rotation
Two or three pairs is plenty ā one plain stud, one small hoop, maybe one slightly dressier option for days with client meetings or presentations. You don't need a different pair every day; you need pieces that never feel wrong regardless of what the day brings.
